Main shopping areas in Madrid

Gran Via

This one of the busiest streets in Madrid. It’s the equivalent of Oxford street in London because its packed full of shops and well as being a main thoroughfare for cars and buses. You will find every famous Spanish high street brand here amongst the cafes, theatres and hotels.

Sol

Running North away from Puerta de Sol there are a number of pedestrianised streets that will lead you to Gran Via. Along these streets you will find many restaurants and shops. It’s a great area to pick up Madrid souvenirs, look at small independent shoe shops or scour the rails of some of those high street brands.

Salamanca

This is the area for more exclusive shops. You’ll find smaller boutique shops, high-end fashion and designer labels. The main streets are Calle Serrano and Calle Velazquez. The majority of big designers like Jimmy Choo, Dolce and Gabbana & Prada are on Calle Jorge Juan and Calle de Jose Ortega. There is a lovely little shopping centre near Serrano metro station called El Jardin de Serrano.

One Year Until Winter Olympics: Rejoice Curling Fans Around The World

It seemed like just yesterday that I was receiving above my Olympic fever, Commonwealth Games hysteria, and X-Games nausea, but now the Winter Olympics 2012 are much less than a 12 months away and Vancouver is gearing up, and I’m loading up on my Dramamine to handle it all. Of course, the clever traveler would head now before rates skyrocket submit-games to consider benefit of the somewhat affordable lift tickets at Whistler — the site of upcoming year’s downhill skiing competitions — for $89 or do some cross-nation skiing in Whistler Olympic Park for a mere $20. Or my favourite ski-town sport: aggressive hot tub lounging.

Ghost Tower: Climbing Bangkok’s Abandoned Skyscraper

Abandoned Skyscraper in Bangkok Bangkok, Thailand The skyscraper’s 43rd floor is the most haunted of them all. Treading carefully over piles of debris, I pick my way through musty darkness praying I won’t vanish into a hole. It happened in the bathroom. One morning a local photographer who was climbing the tower happened to smell something rancid and went to investigate. That’s when he discovered the body. Sathorn Unique Building Bangkok’s Sathorn Unique skyscraper was supposed to become a premium luxury apartment complex with amazing views of the Chao Phraya River. That was until this massive construction project was suddenly abandoned due to the collapse of the Thai Baht during Asia’s 1997 Financial Crisis. Left to rot in neglect, the unfinished skyscraper eventually became a home for drug addicts, homeless vagrants, and wild dogs. Essaouira: Attempting to find calm in Morocco

I surprised myself when I first arrived in Morocco by really falling hard for Marrakech, somewhere that I was convinced I’d hate.  And then when I had an amazing, life-changing experience in the Sahara Desert, I thought it was settled. I love Morocco. After having such a fantastic introduction to the country in Marrakech, I knew I could quite easily spend the entire month there. I had to move on though as there was so much more of the country I wanted to see! My next stop was the beachside town of Essaouira. I’d heard from every single person who’d been to Essaouira that it was the place to go to chill out and relax. If you need to get away from the chaos of Marrakech and Fes then your best option is head to Essaouira. After researching a little and finding out that it used to be a pitstop on the hippie trek from Marrakech in the 60’s with Jimi Hendrix, Bob Marley and the Rolling Stones passing through, I knew I would love it. I adore hippie beach towns! And for the first few
