11 Awesome Hostels to Stay at in Colombia

Out of all the countries that I have travelled to so far, Colombia just happened to have some of the best hostels I have ever stayed at. I barely had any bad experiences with the hostels so I thought I would make a little post with all the awesome hostels that I visited. Of course, there are probably a lot of other cool Hostels out there in Colombia but I can only write about the ones that I know personally. So here is a list of 11 awesome hostels to stay at in Colombia.

Medellin

Purple Monkey Hostel

The Hostel is really nicely decorated, all in purple, hence the name. There is a roof top bar where you don’t actually have any view of the city but is an awesome place to socialise with fellow travellers. The staff is friendly and when I had to leave for the airport at 4am they just allowed me to sleep on the pillows even though I had checked out the day prior.

Rango Boutique Hostel

This is definitely one of the fanciest hostels I have ever stayed at. There is a massive breakfast buffet which is included and definitely the best breakfast I have had in a hostel. The hostel is really beautifully decorated and the staff is friendly.

Los Patios

Los Patios is for sure one of the best hostels in Colombia. It consists of two building that are opposite each other, there is an awesome rooftop bar and they offer a lot of activities to meet other people. I did a night bike tour which was super nice. The location is great as well, really close to the big supermarket and the metro station El Poblado is only a seven minute walk away.

The Garden of Blues Hostal

Located more up the “hill” in the El Poblado neighbourhood, The Garden Hostel is surrounded by a lot of nice little restaurants and just a few minutes away from the nightlife. The staff was really friendly and the beds were super comfortable. The nicest thing about this hostel were the decorations, as it is decorated with a lot of plants and there are nice areas to hang out in. There is also free breakfast included.

Santa Marta

Dreamer’s Hostel Santa Marta

While there is not too much to do in Santa Marta itself, the city has so many great hostels for some reason. I loved the Dreamer’s hostel in Santa Marta, the food was cheap and good, the rooms where nicely decorated and there were enough places to chill out during the day. They have daily events as well such as beer pong or a family dinner and the pool is great as well.

Calle 11

Located in the neighbourhood of El Rodadero, this small hostel used to be a cartel villa. It is close to a supermarket and also just a five minute walk away from the beach. The hostel is small enough to be social and the staff really tries to get all guests to join daily events. Also the reception staff were the friendliest people ever. I was gone for a couple of days to hike to the Lost City and when I returned to the hostel they even remembered my name and checked me right in again.

Palomino

Dreamer’s Hostel

The hostel itself was super pretty and massive. The rooms are all named after different countries and it is just a one minute walk away from the beach. The pool was great and the restaurant on-side has a great variety of foods. For my preferences it was maybe a little bit too big to be social but I would stay again.

Tiki Hut Hostel

There is a good restaurant at the Tiki Hut hostel and a nice pool to hang out at. It is right by the beach so the location is great. There is not much going on at night but that is the same for every place in Palomino even on the weekends.

Cartagena

Hostel Mamallena

This Hostel is located in the neighbourhood of Getsemani. It is small enough to be quite social and hanging out at the tables in the middle is a good place to meet people at night time. There are a couple of cats and the owners’ dog is super friendly so if you love animals that is the place. The only downside was, the rooms were absolutely freezing!! I slept with every long shirt I had with me, my fleece jacket and all my towels and I still got sick because of the air conditioning. Good thing I was flying home two nights later. Other than that it was a great place.

Viajero Cartagena Hostel

I really liked the layout of the hostel as there was a large path in the middle where you could hang out during the day. The bar was nice as well and the breakfast that you can pay for extra was good, too. Staff wasn’t the friendliest but way better than the one’s at the Viajero hostel in Salento.

Other

El Rio Hostel

El Rio Hostel is located somewhere between Santa Marta and Palomino in a place called Buritaca. It’s about 20 minutes away by motor taxi to Tayrona National Park and about 30 minutes to Palomino. However, the location is not important as you will spend most of your time at the hostel anyway. The food that you can buy there is pretty good and there are some nice activities offered from the hostel. It is also just next to the river. You can also sleep in hammocks and it was actually one of the most comfortable sleeps I have had while traveling. The hostel is mostly booked out so make sure to book your stay early.

Places I didn’t like:

Viajero Salento Hostel

I had stayed here for three nights and the staff always seemed like I was bothering them when I wanted to ask a question. Also, the beds were quite uncomfortable.
