Tips for Backpacking Prague

Visiting Prague next? Here’s what you should do while in Prague. If you only have two days in Prague (or more), this should give you enough ideas on what to do during your backpacking trip in Prague.

Before we start, I’d like to tell you it’s a great choice! I visited the Czech Republic several times, in fact, I spent a whole month in Prague in August 2019. If you’re going on a trip around Europe – Prague should be on your list.

Unique things to do in Prague

Why is Prague so special you may ask?

There’s something magical about Prague. How can you not be compelled by a colorful city where every time you turn a corner, you still are amazed. Every street, every view, every day is beautiful. And yet, I’m running out of English vocabulary to properly express my love, my new passion for Prague.  There are many cool things to do in Prague so you can have a unique holiday!

So many movies have been filmed in Prague and you can easily understand why as you walk around.

Prague is a great destination for everyone. Forget about your secret passion, your gender and your age, you must go!

Traveling to Prague is perfect for photographers, couples seeking a romantic escape, families, solo travelers… you name it.

In fact, Prague is one the safest cities in the world and that’s why it is still busy even when you travel “off-season”.

Museum-lovers, creepy maniac weirdos, Instagrammers,  history nerds, typical tourists, food-porn seekers and off the beaten path travelers will be pleased in Prague.

Prague is also the home of the Sex Machines Museum and Museum of Historical Chamber Pots and Toilets.  Sounds interesting, doesn’t it?  You might also want to visit the nuclear bunker, the bone chapel or Terezín concentration camp while you’re there.

Hidden places in Prague

Historically-wise, Prague is super interesting.

If you’re after a day or a night off the beaten path, where you can enjoy a site pretty much to yourself (or almost) and if you’re seeking a little history lesson, I’d suggest you go on a tour with the Naked Tour Guide. (Don’t worry, your guide won’t be naked! You weren’t worried though, were you?)

They offer three different tours; an early morning one,  a mid-day one and a castle tour at night.  I chose the last one and seriously, keep the castle for the night. It’s much prettier! And when I say much prettier,  I mean it. Would you believe me if I told you nobody is around and you’ll have the best view to yourself?

As you walk around the city, you’ll be surrounded by historical bits.  I’d suggest you go on a tour to learn more about Prague.  I would recommend any tours by the Naked Tour Guide or you could also go for the free tour offered by many hostels around.

Food-wise, Prague will comfort you.

It has been a long journey food-wise here for me. Being a fussy eater, I struggled to adapt to it – and it less than 3 weeks, I became a part-time Czech food eater! Bread dumplings, potato dumplings, pork, chicken, fried cheese, pickled cabbage, goulash… these should add be on your food to-do list.

Here are my favorite restaurants in Prague (note that you should book a table to make sure to have a table – these can get busy):

  • Na Kvetnici – Save the location
  • Krcma – Save the location
  • Restaurace Mincovna – Save the location
  • Kuchyn – Save the location

So, what to do in Prague? | Beautiful Places in Prague

Here are my favorite colorful spots in Prague and what I would suggest are the best places in Prague:

Prague Astronomical Clock & Old Town Square

Places to visit in Prague in 3 days

Prague Astronomical Clock is a must for many!  If you go up, you will get an amazing view of the Old Town.  Personally, I decided to skip it as I found other great spots for a more affordable view.  I have to say, it looks pretty beautiful though!  As this part of the city is quite touristy, you might have to share the view with a crowd!

The Old Town Square is surrounded by beautiful and colorful buildings.  In the area, you will find many restaurants and food stands.  Although, it will be a bit more pricey as it’s the touristy area.

Pražský Metronom

I’d say grab lunch and go for a picnic with a view!  Many young people are hanging around this spot and it’s easily accessible.  Bonus: it’s free!

Charles Bridge

Probably, the most popular bridge around, you must go on it!

John Lennon Wall

Street art lovers and rainbow color hunters (like me!) have to add John Lennon Wall on their list.  It changes quickly and you might have the chance to hear a street performer while you’re there too.

The Old Town Bridge Tower

Cool places in Prague

I hope you can find this spot easily.  As soon as you cross Charles Bridge to get to Prague Castle, you’ll see a little tower on the right-hand side of the street.  It’s more affordable than the Astronomical clock and the view is stunning!

Prague Castle

What to see in Prague in 3 days

First, I’d suggest you go to the area during the day as you can get a pretty good view of the city around the castle as it’s higher. Then, as already mentioned, I would suggest you go on a night tour to see the castle light up at night!

The Beer Garden

You don’t even need to drink beer to enjoy Vysehrad. The view is one of the best in town – you can grab a drink or a sausage at their small canteen. I recommend you go around sunset time for the best experience.

Saturday Market

On a Saturday morning, get fresh vegetables and fruits (or pick up your lunch) at Náplavka. This market gets quite busy but the food is amazing.

Rent a paddleboat

Go to Zofin island and rent a paddleboat, so you can enjoy the views of the bridge directly on the water. Grab drinks or a local Czech beer and relax under the sun.

Where to stay in Prague:

I had the privilege to stay at Sophie’s Hostel while I was in Prague. Seriously,  this is probably the best hostel out there (and I would even say “worldwide”)!

What’s so special about Sophie’s Hostel?

Right on my arrival, I was amazed by the staff. The kind girl who checked me in gave me great tips about Prague. I didn’t have to ask anything, all the information was served on a silver platter. I knew where the supermarket was,  the local and cheap restaurants/pubs and where to find the best sights in town.

Then, I discovered my room. How can you not be happy with the most charming private room? It’s the best of both worlds; you have the privacy but also the great atmosphere found in a hostel.

I also visited other rooms in this hostel and even the dorms look great! They have female dorms (yes!) Which provide a private kitchen and bathroom.  So, ladies, this seems like the perfect option!

They offer two types of breakfast buffets (a cold one/a hot one). And seriously, the hostel breakfast brings you to a whole new level. It makes you believe that they understand how it should work! (Yes, they also had pancakes!)

Backpacking Prague Hostel

Sophie’s Hostel is one cool property. It’s also part of a bigger family; Bohemian Hostels & Hotels.

I visited Miss Sophie’s New Town which is a boutique hotel next door, and again, I was absolutely under the charm of this place.

You might want to take a look at Czech Inn (ultra-modern hostel), the Nicholas Hotel Residence (charming and very romantic hotel), Sir Toby’s (another unique hostel) and Somewhere Nice.  This last one isn’t located in Prague, but in Ghana, for the more adventurous!

BEFORE YOU GO TO PRAGUE

☑ Book your flight: If your flight isn’t booked yet – check out the flights on Skyscanner or via Google Flights. My top saving tip is flexibility. If you’re flexible, you should be able to find a cheaper flight.

☑ Book your accommodation: I always use Airbnb and Booking.com. If you’d rather stay in a hostel, you should take a look at the options on Hostelworld. If you click on the Airbnb link and you don’t have an account yet – you’ll get a $30 discount on your first booking.

☑ Protect your cute face: Oh, you may want to protect your cute face with a travel medical insurance. I would suggest SafetyWing as they offer the best rates, especially for long-term travelers. Otherwise, you can also take a look at World Nomads.

☑ Pack the essentials: You can consult this list when it’s time to pack your bag! Do not leave without a universal charger, a power bank and your passport!

☑  Do you need a visa? If you aren’t sure if you need a visa, it would be a smart idea to take a quick look before you go. You can use iVisa – it’s super useful and easy to use.

Things to do in Luxembourg City: A Delightful Weekend Guide

This roundup of things to do in Luxembourg City was created in collaboration with Visit Luxmbourg, who graciously hosted me on this trip. Imagine if you will, a miniscule wonderland packed with castles, greenery and slate grey rooftops over hues of pastel yellow and pink. A place where everybody speaks four languages, where trams are rainbow, and where electric buses are capable of  driving themselves. It appears this wonderland does exist, my friends… and it’s called Luxembourg. *brief pause for gasps and shock* Landlocked between France, Germany and Belgium, Luxembourg is a micro-country known mostly as a metropolitan hub for civil servants, bankers and pleeeenty of cross-border commuters. As such, it’s no surprise that Luxembourg hasn’t quite acquired the tourist magnetism of its nearby neighbours. But you know me, never one to judge until I’ve seen it for myself! And truthfully, when I was invited to explore Luxembourg City for 24 hours with Vis...

The Perfect 12-Day Northern USA Road Trip Itinerary for Montana, Wyoming, and the Dakotas

I've said it before but I'll say it again: there's no better way to see the United States than by taking to the road. Road tripping is the ultimate way to explore America, and there's no shortage of options whether you want to travel for 10 days or 10 months. Certain US road trip routes are more popular than others, though; we've all heard of Route 66 and California's Highway 1. You've maybe looked into driving through the American Southwest, or perhaps through New England in the fall. But what about the states that tend to be overlooked? While Utah and California and even Florida have great road trip potential, the truth is that there's something to see in EVERY state in this union. Grand Tetons Which is why my sister and I decided to tackle a slightly less-popular road trip route last summer: we decided we wanted to focus on the northern states that never seem to get enough love. States like Montana, Wyoming, North Dakota, and So...
