Explore Nungnung Waterfall, Bali

Bali is a dreamland when it comes to chasing waterfalls. There are so many waterfalls in Bali! If you want to explore Bali on your own, why not go on a Bali waterfall route/adventure? You could discover some of the most beautiful waterfalls in Bali. Once in a while, I go on day trips to explore Bali.  My most recent discovery was Nungnung Waterfall. In fact, until today, it’s the most incredible waterfall I’ve seen here. Let’s see where it’s located, how to get there and what to expect.

 

Where is Nungnung Waterfall?

Nungnung Waterfall is located in the north of Ubud, not too far from the Twin Lakes. It’s about an hour from Ubud, an hour from Canggu and an hour from Munduk.

Visiting Nungnung Waterfall is better during the dry season.  I tried visiting waterfalls during the rainy season, and sometimes, the paths are closed or the waterfalls don’t look as pretty as during the dry season.  It doesn’t mean, it’s impossible, but as the weather can be unpredictable, you might want to avoid disappointment if you’re going to drive an hour to get there.

I personally left Canggu about 6h30am to get to Nungnung Waterfall just before 8. As we were there quite early, we had the chance to have the waterfall to ourselves, which is perfect for photography but also more pleasant overall.

Bonus: the early drive was great and super scenic! We could clearly see the volcanoes with a beautiful sunshine! You might also discover Bali rice terraces on the way there!

One thing I learned with waterfalls in Bali, Indonesia is that most times, you’re likely handling a lot of steps. To reach the waterfall, we had to go down thousands of steps 509 steps. Then, we walked on a little path where we saw a smaller waterfall.  At that point, I was ready for a disappointment, it looked like nothing. Then, I heard my friend saying like something “Ouhhh Wowww!”. I got excited!

Nungnung Waterfall was truly impressive. It’s one of the best Bali waterfalls I’ve seen! It also feels like it’s not super crowded/popular yet. I don’t know a lot of people who have been there, to be honest, and I guess this could be related to the fact that it’s a bit out of the way.

We stayed there for a bit, and then we started climbing up. Of course, I did realize how unfit I was, but fingers crossed, you might be in better shape than I am!

When we got back up, the shop, restaurant and toilets were opened. We had a quick chat with the locals up there and everyone seem to be super lovely.

How long does it take to go down: 10 minutes

How long does it take to go up: 20 minutes depending on how fit you are!

Tips for Driving a Scooter in Bali

 

We got there via scooter. I’ve been exploring Bali by scooter for a while now, and here are a few tips:

  • Use headphones to follow the indications on Google Maps.  This way, you won’t have to stop every 3 minutes to look at the map.
  • Make sure you have good sunglasses.  The sun rays can be rough in Bali. Also, it’s normal to hit bugs or to deal with a lot of dush while driving in Bali, so having sunglasses can be super handy!
  • You might want to grab a mask.
  • Make sure your body is sunshine ready. Put on lots of sunblocks, otherwise, you might turn into a lobster.

 

If you don’t drive a scooter

 

If you aren’t confident enough to drive a scooter, you could hire a driver for the day. You can normally find a driver in Facebook groups or using apps such as Grab or GoJek (or you could also ask the staff at your accommodation). If you want to see many waterfalls in one day, you could also book a waterfalls tour!
